(Continuation from previous letter.) Israel’s chosenness is not a claim of superiority but a special mission, accompanied by unlimited Divine strength: to live by Torah and thereby illuminate the entire world. This mission is not limited by the Jews’ small numbers or by exile. The Hakhel year emphasizes that all Jews—men, women, and children—must unite around Torah, leading the world to recognize G-d’s kingship and hastening the complete Redemption.

Tishrei supplies the strength for the entire year and concludes with the instruction, “And Yaakov went on his way”: to enter the year’s service and make the world a dwelling for G-d through Torah and mitzvot performed with joy. In a Hakhel year, the mitzvah’s enduring message must be practiced everywhere by gathering many Jews, especially children, so that they actually observe the entire Torah as given at Sinai, without alteration or compromise. This unity spreads light and hastens Redemption.

(Continuation from previous letter.) “And Yaakov went on his way” teaches that the Divine mission belongs to every Jew from the beginning of his service, even while he is still on the level of “Yaakov.” He must become a true “walker,” never satisfied with a good spiritual state but rising to a level beyond comparison with the previous one; and “his way” is the King’s road, linking the remotest place with the royal palace. Through prayer, Torah, mitzvot, and charity, a Jew joins the world with G-d and must illuminate even its farthest reaches with joy and steadily increasing light.

The order of the Chanukah observances teaches that practical action comes first: kindling the light of Torah and mitzvot within the home and illuminating the “outside” as well. The deed is followed by recognizing that the light is holy, that the ability to fulfill the mitzvah comes from G-d, and that even when Jews are few and weak, they must do their part without calculating the odds and place their trust in Him. Children who are not yet obligated like adults can thereby show how precious the mitzvot are to them and become shining examples both at home and outside.

Every mitzvah brings light and change into the world, although its effect is not always immediately visible. The Chanukah lamp is distinctive because it produces visible light directed toward the “outside,” thereby illuminating both the external darkness of exile and the inner darkness within a person. The order of the lighting teaches one to begin with action, intend only to fulfill G-d’s will, affect one’s surroundings, serve with joy, and trust G-d even when the few confront the many; in this way every Jew becomes a shining light throughout the year.

A person may imagine that he is free while actually enslaved to his desires, habits, and surroundings. The Exodus teaches that true freedom comes through surrendering oneself to G-d and accepting the Torah, thereby leaving both inner and outer limitations. Remembering the Exodus each day gives strength to continue this process until one is genuinely free—serving G-d rather than becoming a servant to His servants.

Vacation is not a vacation from the life of the soul, for Torah and mitzvot are its breath and nourishment and cannot be interrupted. On the contrary, when students are free from secular studies, they should use the opportunity to increase their Torah and mitzvot with greater vitality and enthusiasm. Preparation for receiving the Torah, which follows the counting of every day of the Omer, teaches that this growth should continue throughout every day of the summer.

Elul is a time for self-examination and preparation for the new year through the three pillars on which the world stands: Torah, prayer, and deeds of kindness. These are alluded to in verses whose initials spell Elul and must find practical expression in increased Torah study, prayer, charity, and mitzvot. Such service, accompanied by trust in G-d, prepares for a good year and the complete Redemption.

Rosh Hashanah is the coronation of G-d as King, requiring wholehearted acceptance of His authority throughout every part of life. Although the material world, bodily needs, and the small number of Torah-observant Jews may appear to be obstacles, a Jew need not fear: G-d loves him, entrusted him with the mission, and supplies the strength to fulfill it. This trust produces joyful service and itself draws increased blessing from Above.
