The Paschal offering and circumcision express two forms of service that are always necessary: beginning a new path of goodness and repairing the past through teshuvah. Just as a person receives new life each morning and reviews his conduct at day’s end, the Exodus in every generation requires him to turn away from evil and choose anew the path of Torah and mitzvot. His personal liberation from limitation then becomes part of the general Redemption.

Rosh Hashanah is called the beginning of Creation although it marks the creation of man, because only man can bring all Creation to its purpose. Though quantitatively small, man’s true qualitative greatness lies in recognizing what is above his intellect and submitting himself to G-d. By accepting G-d’s kingship he elevates the entire world; therefore even one individual, or a small minority faithful to Torah and mitzvot, can and must influence its whole surroundings and show that the world belongs to G-d.
