The Exodus was the liberation of the entire Jewish people, yet the Pesach offering had to be apportioned to each household and each individual. This teaches that the redemption of the community begins with the work of the individual: he must refine himself, his home, and his immediate surroundings, faithfully carrying out the small duties of daily life. Broad declarations and resolutions concerning the community cannot replace the work that rests upon the person himself.

Rosh Hashanah is observed on the anniversary of man's creation because man's task is to bring the whole creation to fulfillment by using everything within it for goodness and holiness. The creation of one solitary man teaches that every individual can affect the entire world. If one person has demonstrated the power to bring immense destruction, the power to accomplish good is surely greater; on Rosh Hashanah, the strength to carry out such good resolutions throughout the year is renewed.
