Tefillin are a constant sign and remembrance of the Exodus because the inner meaning of the Exodus is the liberation of the Jew's essential being from every limitation. A Jew always remains G-d's child and servant and therefore possesses the power to master bodily desires and environmental influence. Placing Tefillin upon the arm and head subjects the heart and mind—which direct thought, speech, and action—to G-d, thereby bringing the Exodus into a person's life every day.

The essential service of Rosh Hashanah is to crown G-d as King and accept the yoke of His sovereignty. Throughout the year, this acceptance is the foundation of Divine service; on Rosh Hashanah, however, it is the very essence of the day and must therefore permeate the person's entire being. Although modern life emphasizes independence and self-assertion, this need not obstruct such service: a strong, independent person who truly recognizes G-d's kingship can devote himself to it deeply and permanently, express it in every detail of life, and influence other Jews to do likewise.
