True freedom must embrace all three parts of human life: the soul, the body, and the surrounding world. There is no freedom when the soul is subordinated to the body, or when a Jew observes Torah only at home while submitting to his environment in business. The Exodus teaches that the soul must be freed from everything that obstructs its purpose, while the body and the world must be elevated into harmony with the soul; only then are all three truly free.

Faced with insecurity in the world and spiritual opportunities that were not fully used, every Jew must ask how he can improve his own condition and that of the world. Rosh Hashanah answers through the acceptance of G-d's kingship: each individual crowns G-d over himself by ordering his life according to Torah and Mitzvoth, thereby helping reveal G-d's sovereignty throughout the world. Since the spiritual determines the material, Teshuvah, prayer, and charity bring improvement and blessing to the individual, the Jewish people, and the world, both spiritually and materially.
